The Incredible Quest to Preserve a Dying Language in the Northern Cape

Saide's African Storybook South African Country Co-ordinator, Lorato Trok has been working extensively with the Northern Cape Department of Education and Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, particularly running successful mother tongue story creation workshops. Through these engagements Lorato recently had the privledge of meeting Katrina Esau, Queen of the Khoisan people in Rosedale, a township outside Upington. The 83-year old Ouma Katrina is the driving force behind the quest of preserving her dying language N/uu which is thought to be one of the oldest languages in the world.

  Siyaphumelela Ethics Symposium

The issue of collecting, using, sharing and managing data holds ethical implications that warrants mindful consideration by all Siyaphumelela partner Institutions. Saide organised an Ethics symposium, on behalf of the Siyaphumelela Project, which is exploring the use of data analytics to improve student success together with selected South African universities. The twofold objective of the symposium was: to understand the ethical use of student data by the South African higher education sectors and to develop a draft policy to support the use of student data analytics. Najma Agerdien attended the symposium and provides feedback.

The Eighth Pan Commonwealth Forum

Last week all roads from all over the Commonwealth countries led to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This was the venue of the Eighth Pan Commonwealth Forum (PCF8), which was hosted by the Open University of Malaysia (OUM). Planned by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), the PCF is held triennially and provides an opportunity for the Commonwealth community to exchange knowledge, experiences and innovative ideas on enhancing human development by widening access to high quality education. Ephraim Mhlanga reports.
